Remember to use toll-free numbers to make travel reservations at motels or hotels along your travel route. Be sure to ask for the best rate. Senior citizen rate? Business rate? Pitiful-me rate?

• If using movers, stand by to answer questions while movers pack your belongings.

• Disconnect and prepare major appliances for move.

• Set aside anything that will travel in your car so that it will not be loaded on the truck.

• Pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house.

• Get cash or travelers checks for the trip and to pay the movers.
